Basterfield House,
Golden Lane

City of London
2013
-

A duplex apartment in the Listed Golden Lane Estate (Chamberlain Powell and Bon) was meticulously restored and upgraded for modern living. Golden Lane Estate is an exemplary listed mid twentieth century housing development.
Originally built for City key workers, its apartments are now in 60%/40% public/private ownership. Although well designed, the building fabric is outdated in relation to modern sustainable and energy conscious standards. The client brief was to transform the accommodation to provide upgraded facilities and standards of comfort. The challenge was their achievement whilst preserving and enhancng the existing character and vision of the duplex apartment. A lining strategy was used to improve the existing external skins. Timber walls were over framed and insulated and windows were sensitively secondary glazed. The kitchen and bathroom were transformed in a Modernist spirit. The bespoke white galley kitchen is well fitted and efficient. The services were renewed, a heat exchange system installed to complement and make more efficient the existing installation. The design sustains the idea of urban living in which communal engagement and individual privacy are balanced.
