Technological Development

Part of the work involved in realising projects in our office is to develop new ways of and building elements, and designing bespoke items.

We are committed to using energy saving techniques which enhance our designs from the smallest moves such as economy flush systems on WC units to grey water reuse and solar collection.

Green Oak - Twilly Springs

The construction of the playroom at Twilly Springs presents a refinement of timber construction – green and seasoned oak. The same company made the whole timber building, resolving the problematic issue of accentuated movement inherent in green oak by rebating every joint.
The project speaks of what crafting says of culture and modern life – despite the tendency to move, the technical strategy of rebating removes the necessity for members such as skirtings typically used to conceal joints. This is a seemingly traditional building which through its technical approach allows a kind of detail more typically associated with paired down modern buildings. It avoids the last resort evident in the mastic joint.
The frame members of the green oak frame allow for spatial adjustment – not as economical structures but as load bearing frames – trabeated - their variations acknowledging the multiple options for the static distribution of its members
